Seeing is believing. In this demonstration, surface-mounted tire spikes were mounted outside of a residential household. As the vehicle rolled over the device, the tires were punctured — and the spikes were still fully intact, ready for the next vehicle.
The security implications are straightforward: if this car had been intending to rob this house, it would have been very easy for police to catch the thieves once the car's tires had been deflated. A getaway vehicle isn't getting away on flat tires.
It's this same principle that leads business owners to install traffic spikes in parking lots — increasing security and making their properties far less attractive targets for theft.
